A review of employment data in Erie’s Public Schools for the current school year, showed that some 96 percent of teachers in the district are white, with four percent  members of a minority. As the school district increases its efforts to recruit teachers of color, Gary Horton, President of the NAACP, told Joel Natalie on TalkErie.com yesterday, that one of the reasons teacher percentages don’t match the general population, is the cost of getting a teacher certification.

Horton called for transformational scholarship grants to improve the number, because the benefit is great. “One minority teacher increases by almost 30% the opportunity for minority kids to graduate,” Horton said.
