City of Erie Mayor Joe Schember is asking City Council to restrict the use of alcohol in Perry Square and Griswold Park and ban the use of all tobacco products in all city parks and playgrounds. Schember told TalkErie.com that the goal is to make city parks more family-friendly.

“We are trying to make our downtown parks family-friendly and safe, and so you will not be allowed to drink alcohol in open containers in Perry Square or Griswold Plaza going forward. We’ve had a lot of complaints, especially about Perry Square. People are afraid to walk through the center of the park,” Mayor Schember said.

Under the plan, alcohol would still be allowed during special events if organizers get a permit from the city.
