175 high school students from 12 area schools descend on downtown Erie Friday for the annual Youth Civic Engagement Symposium. It’s sponsored by the anti-poverty initiative, Erie Together, to expose students to elected officials and government workers at the local, state and federal levels.
Mary Bula of Erie Together told TalkErie.com that, not only do the students learn what kind of jobs are available in government, but how to be active citizens.
“It helps people feel better about themselves when they know they have some control over their future, and one way to do that is by becoming better civically-engaged in their community,” Bula said.
