Erie, PA – County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper today announced one new positive case of COVID-19 has been reported in Erie County, taking the total to 16. One of these cases is believed to have been community acquired.

Community acquired means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.

“It’s important to remember that while surfaces can hold COVID-19 for up to three days, it is primarily transmitted from human to human,” Dahlkemper said.

Social distancing is the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Residents are reminded to only go out when it is absolutely necessary and to make visits to the store with just one family member.

Dahlkemper urged religious leaders to close their doors to services and group gatherings and instead offer alternatives: “Start a pray chain, use the phone or video conferencing technology or even social media to share messages instead of physically going to church.”

As of Monday, March 30, Erie County had seen more than 475 tests completed with 461 of those being negative. The low number of positives is a sign that social distancing is working and must remain in place, if not followed even more diligently now with a case that was community acquired.

Governor Tom Wolf extended the stay-at-home order through April 30 for Erie County and 32 other counties in Pennsylvania.

During today’s press briefing, Erie County President Judge John Trucilla announced the extension of the closure of the Erie County Courthouse. The courthouse will remain closed to nonessential proceedings through May 4.
