Tom Spagel, a member of the Erie School Board, has announced that will run for mayor of the City of Erie in the Democratic primary, according to a post on a new campaign Facebook page Tuesday.  Spagel will run against incumbent Mayor Joe Schember in the Pennsylvania primary set for May 18.  Mayor Schember formally announced his intentions to seek reelection last week.

The following was posted on Spagel’s campaign page:

Friends, as some of you may know, I have decided to run for Mayor. I love our city. But for far too long, we’ve been complacent within the walls of City Hall. We’ve elected nice people, but haven’t seen action. I promise to fight for us, to turn our city into a place where our youth stays, where opportunities are plentiful, and where we can work together to accomplish great things.

Spagel will formally launch his campaign on Thursday, from Staganelli’s, an Italian food store in Erie owned by Spagel’s family.
