Erie MSA unemployment rate at 8.8% in January

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was 8.8 percent in January. The statewide unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, while the national rate was 6.3 percent.

Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in the Erie MSA increased 0.8 percent over the month (+900) to 118,600 in January. Over the year, jobs were down 7.6 percent (-9,700) in the MSA, similar to the statewide jobs decline of 7.5 percent over the same period.

Jobs in all supersectors were either unchanged or down over the month. Trade, transportation, & utilities (-800) had the largest movement as the holiday shopping and shipping seasonal wound down. No other supersectors declined by more than 300.
