Erie County Department of Health Director Melissa Lyon provides statement regarding guidelines
County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper and Erie County Department of Health announce 30 new positive cases of COVID-19 and one additional death have been reported in Erie County as of 11:59 p.m. on May 13.
The total cumulative cases of COVID-19 in Erie County since March 2020 is 20,631 with 465 deaths (reported in NEDSS). This information can be found on the chart on the “Positive Cases in Erie County” page at eriecountypa.gov.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or physically distance indoors or outdoors in most circumstances.
“Nevertheless, to continue protecting our less healthy or under-immunized community members and loved ones, we encourage continued use of masks whenever appropriate,” said Melissa Lyon, director of the Erie County Department of Health. “Universal masking prevents infected persons from spreading the disease if they have no or mild symptoms.”
Lyon said that businesses can retain more thorough masking requirements should they feel the need to do so. “Public health depends on all our efforts. We should not let our guard down just yet,” she added.
All residents are reminded to wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth when near anyone who does not live inside their home, keep a 6-foot distance from others, stay home when feeling ill, wash hands frequently, and limit activities outside of their homes.
The next press briefing will take place Wednesday, May 19, at 3 p.m. Note: The last regular weekly COVID-19 press briefing will take place Wednesday, March 26.
