Calls for Emergency Medical Services continue to grow in Erie County, but volunteer fire department EMT’s continue to shrink.

The shortage prompts requests for mutual aid from departments outside of the municipality where the medical call originated. On Tuesday, officials from Perry Hi-Way Hose Company in Summit Township told TalkErie News that calls for mutual aid amounted to 42% of their total EMS calls, and they say that’s too many.

Perry Hi-Way notified county emergency officials of plans to stop giving mutual aid for basic EMS calls outside their service area sometime this spring.
