Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) issued the following statement after United Airlines announced they will suspend service to Erie International Airport starting June 2.
“I am disappointed to hear United Airlines is planning to suspend its service at Erie International Airport,” Kelly said. “I have been in touch with airport officials and will continue to work with them to make Erie a vital and vibrant market for airlines to do business. Although I understand this is a business decision, the federal government has assisted the airlines with billions of dollars in support since the pandemic to restore service and to help Americans resume air travel. It’s a shame to see yet another airline leave Erie International Airport, which supports not only western Pennsylvania, but the tri-state region. I encourage United to restore its service to Erie; and I also encourage American Airlines to continue seeing the value that the Erie market brings to the airline industry.”
BACKGROUND
United Airlines announced Thursday, March 23, that beginning June 2, they will suspend its service at Erie International Airport (ERI) in Erie, Pennsylvania citing “careful analysis of operations and market demand.” Currently, United provides four daily flights between Erie and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. This is the only remaining United flight servicing ERI. Only American Airlines will continue to serve ERI starting on June 2. United’s departure from Erie will be the second by a major airline in three years following Delta Air Lines in July 2020.
United’s announcement comes after the federal government provided more than $54 billion in aid the airline industry, which was severely impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
