Gannon University’s Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration returns to campus Sept. 21 through Sept. 24, combining the traditional activities of both Homecoming and Gannon’s Family Weekend to bring together current students and family members in addition to old friends and classmates throughout the weekend festivities.

This year marks a special occasion with the inauguration of Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D. as Gannon’s eighth president on Friday, Sept. 22. All are invited to Inauguration Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, the Inauguration Ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Warner Theatre, and block party celebration with local band Groove on the Green at 7 p.m. on Seventh St.

Kicking off Saturday’s activities is the Gannon Family Tailgate at 10:30 a.m. at the Recreation and Wellness Center parking lot prior to the football game. Game time begins at 1 p.m. as the Golden Knights take on Clarion during the Homecoming football game at McConnel Family Stadium.

The celebration continues Saturday as we proudly honor five Distinguished Alumni honorees who will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. This year’s honorees are Chanel M. Cook ’00, Col. David R. Fabian ’63, Michael A. Fetzner, Esq. ’69 and Kristal Ambrose ’16 with a special award presented in memory of Monsignor Wilfred J. Nash to Msgr. Henry A. Kriegel ’66.

In addition to these events, Gannon’s Student Government Association has a week full of activities planned, including the Fraternity and Sorority Life Bonfire on Sunday, Sept. 17; Cookout with Campus Ministry on Wednesday, Sept. 20; SGA Day on Thursday Sept. 21; Homecoming Dance on Saturday, Sept. 23 and more.

The event-filled weekend concludes with Sunday Mass at 10 a.m. in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel.

Nancy Bird, vice president for university advancement, expressed her enthusiasm about welcoming alumni and friends back to Gannon for a very special Homecoming and Family Weekend.

“Every year is special, but not every year includes a Presidential Inauguration as part of the celebration,” she said. “We hope all of our alumni, family and friends take this time to celebrate traditions, reconnect with the Gannon Family, but most importantly, have fun.”
