About Jim Wertz

Jim Wertz grew up in a working class family in Reading, PA and moved to Erie County 25 years ago to attend Edinboro University. He chose to stay here and raise his family in Erie because he sees the potential in our region, but he also understands the struggles facing families in our community.

A union broadcaster and production manager for local Erie news, Jim founded his own production company before beginning his teaching career committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders in journalism.

Jim has taught journalism and digital media at Edinboro University since 2005 and has served in numerous leadership roles with the faculty union and university administration.

Elected Chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party in 2018, Jim helped turn Erie County blue in 2020 and beyond, working with numerous successful candidates and campaigns prior to his resignation in November 2023.

The Wertz for Senate campaign begins with more than 20 endorsements from former and current local elected officials from across Erie County.

Jim will challenge incumbent Republican Dan Laughlin, who was first elected in 2016.
