In 2023, the Millfair Compost Center, jointly operated by Millcreek and Fairview Township, distributed 6,641 cubic yards of material back into the community after taking in 23,456 cubic yards (5,864 tons) of material. Overall it was visited by 23,107 people.

As a visualization, the Millfair Compost Center took in material that completely fills 14 acres of land when flat. This incoming material weighed more than 800 elephants. The dedicated crew at Millfair then took that and composted enough material to fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“We’re incredibly proud of the hard work shown by the team at Millfair and are looking forward to a productive 2024,” said Community Relations and Sustainability Director Jessica Stutzman.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), composting has many benefits:

  • It enriches the soil, helping to retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests.
  • Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material.
  • Reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers your carbon footprint.

The Millfair Compost Center will open for the 2024 season on Monday, Mar. 11.

Millfair accepts brush, tree trimmings, leaves and non-food garden residue from Millcreek, Fairview and West County residents, at no charge. The facility then takes these items and turns them into mulch and compost for gardens and landscaped areas.

All residents and businesses of Erie County are permitted to purchase Millfair products. Landscapers and businesses are permitted to access the site by obtaining a $20 permit and paying per drop-off.

Millfair Compost Center is located at 2301 Millfair Road. It is open seven days a week. Hours are as follows:

Monday – Saturday 9 AM – 5 PM | Sunday 12 PM – 5 PM
