The City of Erie Fire Department held a swearing in ceremony on Thursday, December 12 in City Council chambers to welcome 16 new fire fighters to the department. Several coworkers, family, and friends were in attendance.
Mayor Joe Schember officiated and said, “This is a big day for the fire fighters sworn in today. But it’s equally important and memorable for me as I look at a group of firefighters who have committed themselves to serving our community and their brothers and sisters in the Erie Fire Department.”
Chief Len Trott addressed those gathered and stressed the important role that loved ones play in the life of a fire fighter, “I would like to congratulate everyone on a job well done. Being a firefighter is a terrific profession, but not always easy. We continue to need the support, encouragement and understanding of all of you. You are a key part of the City of Erie Fire Department family. You make it possible for us to do the job we have sworn to do for the citizens and visitors to the City of Erie.”
Assistant Chief Greg Purchase said, “Since completing their training, the fire fighters have been in the field, gaining invaluable firsthand experience facing fires, motor vehicle accidents, challenging medical events, the overwhelming demands of ‘Snowmageddon’ 2024, and much more — some of which will leave a lasting impact. Through it all, these fire fighters have demonstrated resilience, courage, and the readiness to meet the challenges of this career head-on.”
