We will be featuring our Trout in the Classroom program as well as fly tying, fly and spin casting, water conservation, macroinvertebrates, our local hatcheries, and aquatic invasive species.” Stated Director of Education, Emma Mader.

Fish Field Day
August 2, 2024
11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Nature Center
FREE, open to the public

On the fly
Try out fly fishing with our local Trout Unlimited chapter. This station will feature a fly-fishing and fly-tying demonstration. You can see how far you can cast your line or how many points you can get by hitting your target!

Go Fish
Test out your fishing skills with our local fishing club, S.O.N.S., playing a casting game with pretend target fish.

Fish on!
Erie is known for having some of the best fishing in the country. One of those fisheries is Steelhead. The PA Steelhead Association will host a fishing hole where all are encouraged to come and try reeling in one of the “monster steelheads”.

What’s on the menu?
Everyone loves pizza, right? Well, not fish! They have a very different taste palate. Investigate the foundation of the freshwater food chain by looking at plankton, macroinvertebrates, and other stream life that feed the trout at all stages of their life.

Our Trout in the Classroom
Asbury Woods is proud to have a Trout in the Classroom tank here at the Andrew J. Conner Nature Center. To celebrate our Trout in the Classroom program, come make a trout Hat, do some coloring with our trout life cycle coloring pages, and grab some fish guides provided by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Aquatic Invasive Species Station
Learn about some common aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Pennsylvania and their impacts on freshwater ecosystems, thanks to the Pennsylvania Sea Grant. AIS can pack a big punch on our local environment and economy, so understanding AIS is critical to their management.

Corry Hatchery Stocking Truck
One of our local hatcheries will have their stocking truck to the Asbury Woods Nature Center to talk about all of the work they do to take care of and transport the fish stocked within our community and the surrounding area.

Water is Home
As much as we love swimming, fishing, kayaking, and other water recreation activities, we want to do them in perfect conditions. Who wants to swim in a lake full of toxic algae? Neither do the fish! Learn about the importance of water quality, water pollution, and more. Hooked on Books for Kids will also be present with free water-themed books for interested participants!
