Gannon University’s Model United Nations program to host the 73rd annual Gannon University Model United Nations Conference (GUMUNC) at the First United Methodist Church, located at 707 Sassafras Street in Erie, this weekend.

The Gannon University Model UN committee (GUMUNC) will bring more than 200 high school students from around the tri-state area to discuss global challenges, working towards the goal of creating and passing a resolution on these issues. The conference is run by Gannon’s Model UN student organization overseen by a secretary general, assistant secretary general and an elected board. These students oversee planning and staffing the conference with the help of a faculty advisor.

This year’s secretary general, senior political science and writing dual major Cadence Hoover, has worked with Gannon faculty, staff, and students for over a year to prepare for this year’s conference.

“The Gannon Model United Nations Conference is a wonderful opportunity that brings together students from across the area to discuss issues of international importance from a variety of perspectives,” Hoover said. “I am so honored and excited to welcome these students to Gannon’s campus and to witness their dedication to the core values of the United Nations such as cooperation, a commitment to human rights, and justice for all.

The issues selected by Hoover and other club members range from the preservation of global languages to counter terrorism to a video game themed crisis.

Students will arrive on Friday, Nov. 7, for the opening ceremony and their first session. The conference will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 8 with awards and a closing ceremony.
