On June 26, Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort participated in the 16th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a global event organized by the World Waterpark Association to raise awareness about the lifesaving importance of teaching children how to swim.

Splash Lagoon hosted a free swim lesson for 20 local students, ages 5 to 12, from Iroquois Elementary School, along with several children of Scott Enterprises employees. The event was held in partnership with United Way of Erie County’s Community School program and led by Splash Lagoon’s team of certified lifeguards.

“Water safety is at the core of what we do every day at Splash Lagoon,” said Ryan Cherry, general manager of Splash Lagoon. “We were thrilled to participate in this impactful event and help equip local children with swimming skills that could one day save their lives.”

Started in 2010 by the World Waterpark Association, the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a global initiative aimed at preventing drowning through swim education. The event takes place at water parks, public pools, and swim schools worldwide, uniting communities in teaching kids vital water safety skills. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for U.S. children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause for those ages 5 to 14, but studies show formal swim lessons can lower this risk by up to 88%. Yet, a 2020 American Red Cross survey revealed more than half of Americans either cannot swim or lack basic skills.

The WLSL mission is clear: Swimming Lessons Save Lives. Each year, tens of thousands of children and adults worldwide participate in the event to help spread this vital message.
