Food insecurity is a real problem for low-income children after school lets out. That’s why the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit facilitates serve around 72,000 meals, to kids at 55 sites throughout Erie city and county, including YMCA day camps. YMCA Vice President Tammy Roche told TalkErie.com they’ll quickly start the food program this Monday, as children get stressed about the uncertainty of summer.

“We’re focused on getting these programs up and running, so there’s no gap from the time they get out of school to when they can start to count on that regular routine to showing up at the park, or the church, or the neighborhood center. Reconnecting with adults, and being guaranteed that meal, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner,” Roche said.

Federal and state programs pay for the meals.
