Honorary role will preserve stories, voices, and memories from across Erie’s Public Schools
The Erie School Board has approved a new initiative to preserve the living history of its schools. At its August 13 meeting, the Board unanimously adopted a resolution creating the position of District Historian, a two-year honorary role aimed at documenting and sharing the stories that have shaped Erie’s public schools and neighborhoods.
The program will offer a modest annual honorarium and is open to educators, alumni, researchers, writers, and community members who have a passion for local history and storytelling. The Historian will work with students, staff, and community partners to gather and
share experiences that reflect the district’s past and present.
“This is about remembering who we are,” said Board President Dr. Jay Breneman, author of the resolution. “Every building, every team, every classroom has stories that deserve to be heard. The District Historian will help us carry those stories forward.”
The Historian’s work may include interviews, archival research, public presentations, and creative projects like exhibits, podcasts, or short articles. They will also advise the district on preserving important records and highlighting key events, traditions, and contributions that might
otherwise be forgotten.
The initiative encourages collaboration across generations. The Historian will engage with student leaders and work closely with district staff and local partners, including the Hagen History Center, which will serve as the official repository for materials produced through the program. Connections with local colleges and universities may also offer opportunities for public engagement, mentorship, and research.
