On Friday the 26th, the County and the Metro battled at Paul J. Weiss stadium in Harborcreek. The Metro came into this one on a 3 game win streak, and won 5 of the last 6. That streak came to an end Friday Night when the County, behind a dominant air performance of General McLane graduate and Allegheny College Commit Matt Caro, won the game 29-10.
The County started the game hot by winning the coin toss, electing to receive, having a huge return, and within 3 plays scoring a touchdown. They did that within 30 seconds of the game starting, and would never look back after that. Some key plays included a highly contested deep touchdown catch by Reese Gonzales (Northwestern Grad), and a pick six by Keaton Frisina (Corry Grad) with less than 2 minutes left to extend the lead and secure the win.
The Metro were led by great quarterback play from speedsters Paul Johnson (Erie High Grad) and Jeremiah Bennett (Fairview Grad). Former Fairview kicker Danny Lindenberger also tied a record for the second longest field goal (43 yards) in the 88 years of playing the game.
The County was led by Head Coach of General McLane Marshall McCormick, and the Metro was led by Cathedral Prep’s Mike Mischler. This was the first time that McCormick had coached in the Save-An-Eye game, and Mischler’s 4th.
For those wondering why this game is played, the Save-An-Eye website says, “The Erie Lions Club still directs proceeds toward providing vision care, eye surgeries, and glasses for local residents in need—staying true to the game’s founding purpose from 1939. Modern coverage through live broadcasts, digital media, and expanded community involvement has introduced a new generation to the event’s legacy. More than just a football game, Save-An-Eye continues to unite Erie County through sportsmanship, service, and the shared goal of preserving sight for those who need it most.”
