Grizzly bears, gas wells, and healthy aging don’t typically share a spotlight, but this September, the Jefferson Educational Society is bringing these topics — and more — to its satellite locations across the county.
This year, the JES is bridging the gap between summer programming and the Global Summit with a variety of experts and community collaborations. Partnerships continue with LECOM Health and Ben Franklin Technology Partners to address developments in healthcare and innovation, and Dr. Steve Ropski’s program on grizzly bears returns by popular demand – this time at the JES’s satellite programming location in Corry. Meanwhile, newcomers include the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and federal intelligence expert Michael Ganske.
The satellite programs this coming month, all of which begin at 6 p.m., include:
- Your Home, Your Independence: How to Make It Safer as You Age — Join Stefanie Irwin, an experienced occupational therapist, as she discusses the ways people may maintain a level of independence at home safely as they navigate aging successfully (Aug. 31 at Lincoln Community Center Library, 1255 Manchester Road, Fairview).
- The Role of Intelligence in the Revolutionary War — Explore the hidden world of intelligence and espionage during the American Revolutionary War with career intelligence specialist Michael Ganske and discover how secret operations helped shape the Patriot cause (Sept 2. at Harborcreek Township Building, 5601 Buffalo Road, Harborcreek).
- DEP Gas Well Adoption and Transfer Workshop — Join DEP speakers Kyle Thomas and Elyse Henshaw to discuss the abundance of natural gas wells in the area and what to do when they are forgotten about and fall behind regulatory requirements, oftentimes hidden beneath or nearby houses and businesses (Sept. 10 at Erie Center for Arts and Technology, 650 East Ave., Ada Lawrence Community Room, Erie).
- Alzheimer’s Care Redefined: Supporting Lives, Not Just Symptoms — Join LECOM Institute for Successful Aging’s Dr. James Lin and Melanie Titzel, as they explore the changes in Alzheimer’s and shift the shift in support toward those with Alzheimer’s (Sept. 14 at Lincoln Community Center Library).
- The Grizzly Bears of Yellowstone National Park — After taking 41 groups of students to Yellowstone National Park, writing a tourist guide for the park, and continuing to give tours in his retirement from Gannon University, Dr. Steve Ropski will discuss the reproduction, hibernation, feeding habits, and status of the grizzly bears of Yellowstone National Park (Sept. 15 at Corry Higher Education Council, 221 N. Center St., Corry).
- Innovation in Action: NW PA Founder Conversations — This dynamic and interactive panel convenes founders from the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central & Northern PA portfolio, and will explore how innovation drives growth, resilience and reinvention at both the company level and the community impact that has (Sept. 17 at ECAT).
