The Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships and the United States Canine Scent Sports Classic Trail return to Erie this weekend.
The Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships return to Erie this Saturday at Sinai Sports.
This year’s championship features 83 lifters, ranging in age from 11 to 82, traveling from New York, Ohio and across Pennsylvania.
The doors open at 7:45 a.m., with two sessions held throughout the day. Women and lightweight men begin competing at 9 a.m., followed by heavyweight men at 3 p.m. Awards are presented after each session.
“We are so excited to see that powerlifting is such a growing sport in our area,” said Diane Lewis, meet director of the Great Lakes Powerlifting Championships. “With new lifters at each meet and competitors coming from outside the region, it’s incredible to see the positive impact on both our sport and local tourism.”
In addition, the United States Canine Scent Sports (USCSS) Classic Trail, hosted by USCSS and Groovy Pooch, also returns this Sunday at the Erie County Technical School.
The Classic Trial features 30 dogs of all breeds and skill levels over six months old, showcasing their scent detection abilities in a series of timed elements. Participants are traveling from Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania to compete.
The competition begins at 9 a.m. with Novice and Intermediate levels, followed by Senior and Master levels. Each level includes four search elements: Interior, Exterior, Vehicle and Container. A game class is also offered for all participants.
