Gannon University’s Center for Lake Erie Education and Research (CLEER) has been recognized with a 2026 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence, one of Pennsylvania’s highest honors for environmental innovation and stewardship.

Presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence recognizes projects that demonstrate outstanding environmental protection, innovation, collaboration and measurable impact across the Commonwealth.

Gannon’s Center for Lake Erie Education and Research was recognized for its commitment to making environmental science education accessible, engaging, and available to all. The center serves as a community resource where visitors can explore Lake Erie ecosystems, environmental challenges, and scientific research through interactive exhibits and hands-on learning experiences.

The center, which is located in the Blasco Library on Erie’s waterfront, removes barriers to environmental education by offering free public access during regular operating hours and by providing opportunities for visitors of all ages to engage with Great Lakes data and locally curated exhibits developed in partnership with regional organizations.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to connecting people with the science, ecology, and future of Lake Erie,” said Sam Mason, Ph.D., director of CLEER and Project NePTWNE at Gannon University. “By creating opportunities for lifelong learning and environmental stewardship, the center helps strengthen our region’s connection to one of its most valuable natural resources.”

The 2026 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence were presented during a ceremony hosted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council on June 25 in Harrisburg.
